Staff FAQs

What do I need to become a Selwyn Nursing Bureau staff member?

You will need to be:

  • permitted under New Zealand law to work in New Zealand
  • speak, write and understand English very well.

You will need to have a caring personality, exceptional patience and understanding and have a gift for working with elderly people. Some residents and patients are quite independent and able to do most things for themselves. Others are highly dependent upon their "carer", so you will need to be flexible and reliable.

Is training provided?

Yes. From day one, you will receive training so you can deliver the highest standard of care to residents. We have a dedicated trainer who helps you through initial training and acts as your mentor while you work for us. She is also an ACE assessor and is your first point of contact if you wish to pursue a National Certificate in Aged Care. Our educator runs courses in Auckland in such topics as CPR, challenging behaviour and dealing with diabetes. We expect all staff to take part in training sessions.

How much will I be paid?

Pay depends upon your previous experience, your skills and the work you will be doing. Penal rates are paid on T1.25 at the weekends. Extra allowances are also available depending upon your availability and flexibility.

Do I have to work full-time?

No. Part-time and casual positions are also available.

What are the competencies I need?

A full job description is available on request. Competence in written and spoken English is expected.
